Warm Weather is Here!

I know I haven’t posted in forever. I have been having some flares that have put me down. They haven’t been too bad. A few days at the most. I also got to go on bed rest after my visit to the emergency room. I thought I was going to die. I thought I was having a heart attack it hurt so bad. No, it was pleurisy. I’m not disappointed it is most definitely the better option! LOL! It’s another one of those things that go along with Sjogren’s and Lupus.

Have a wonderful day!

Winter Sowing

I got this great idea from Kevin Lee Jacobs over at A Garden for the House. He starts his garden in the winter in milk jugs! I did mine on January 31st. Basically you take milk jugs cut them open and poke holes in them for drainage. You can get the tutorial over at his blog.

Here is a picture of mine. I bought some seeds and gathered some from my plants in the yard. Since I have never gathered seeds I wasn’t sure if I was actually getting the seeds so I ended up just crumbling the flower buds up in the dirt. 🙂 I know I have amazing talent!

Seeds I bought: Red Hot Poker (Tritoma), Blue Fescue, Echinacea

Seeds(?) I’m experimenting with from my garden: Purple Phlox, Black Eyed Susan, Marigold, and Mini Pink Roses (can you get seeds from the roses?)

Most of the seed packets said they take a few weeks to sprout, but since it is still winter I didn’t expect to see any for a bit. One of the flowers that I tried from buds were my marigolds. I had no idea if they would grow since I used my awesome skills of obtaining my seeds. To my surprise I went outside today and guess what I saw??? I have baby marigolds!!! I’m so excited! One less thing that I have to buy this year! 🙂

Here are my babies…

Aren’t they cute!

I am still collecting milk jugs since I have more flower buds to experiment with. If you have any send them my way!

Green Onions In My Window

I guess I’m a bit behind on posting. A Sjogren’s flare has kicked in and I am tired all the time. I can’t wait for this to end so that I can get my energy back!

I have been doing things between naps. A few weeks ago I saw a great idea on Pinterest. Putting your cut green onions in water. I love finding new ideas!

I got this idea from Homemade Serenity.

Basically after you have cut the green off of your green onions DON’T throw away the white part! Take it and put it in a glass or jar of water. These were cut down to the white about 2 weeks ago and look at how big they are already! I love this idea. I use green onion a lot and hate it when I realize I don’t have any. Now I have them all the time!

Update 1/9/16 – I still do this! You do have to change the water and rinse the roots out every few days. After a bit I  do toss them out and start with new ones. This summer I just put them in my herb planter on the deck and that worked well also.

Hippie or Not?

As the past year has gone by I have been trying to find ways to save money. I’m all about saving the earth and what not, but that was not my original concern. I know… I’m a bad person. I haven’t had a job and after my husband retired from the Air Force he didn’t either for about 8 months. It started out with us doing a garden and coupons and has snowballed from there.

~I try to grow most of our own vegetables. My winter garden failed miserably. The deer came and ate all my new baby plants! ***reminder to put something around/over my garden next year***

~I coupon, but it really does take up so much time that I’m not into it as much as I was at the beginning.

~I taught myself to crochet and made my Christmas presents last year and am working on them this year. I have to stop often because it makes my hands hurt pretty bad but I like doing it and seeing the finished product.

~I am teaching myself to sew.

~I started using vinegar and baking soda for much of my cleaning.

~I bake my own bread… with a bread machine of course! I make my own bagels and cook a week worth of pancakes to last the kids so I don’t have to buy poptarts any more.

~I started composting this year. We will see in the spring how I did on it…

~My recycle bin is overflowing and my trash can is not.

~I always try to reuse things or re-purpose them.

That’s all I can think of at the moment. While looking for recipes I found a new blog that I just love!!! It’s called Crunchy Betty and she has the best info and links all in one place! Here is the link to The Best of Crunchy Betty!

After my research today I went out to purchase all my ingredients and found them all at Walmart! I was very surprised since I haven’t seen the items at regular grocery stores. I am getting my oils online. I got my 5 gallon bucket at Firehouse Subs! Score! We got to eat lunch there also. I hope my laundry doesn’t smell like pickles… 🙂

I’m excited to start making my cleaning products and testing them out! I know many have been tried and tested over and over again, but there are always positive and negative comments so I’m starting on my journey to find the ones that work best for me. I will post them when I make them and try them out with the links to where I found them of course!

Now the question is… am I turning into a hippie? Where do I buy hippie clothes? Oh and that green stuff that they smoke too!!! J/K… Nah, I’m not a hippie, just a chick that wants to know what is in her products and save money at the same time!

Well, that’s it for now! I hope you all have a wonderful night!

Vegi Garden Update

The garden has been doing well, sort of. The plants are all huge! The bell pepper and banana peppers are doing great. The squash has put out a few, but it’s has a bunch of little ones on it now. The cucumber isn’t doing to bad. Still kind of small, but it’s trying and puts out one or two a week.

The tomatoes… well, I’m not sure about them. The were doing great, then the leaves started turning yellow, getting brown spots and shriveling up. I have tried pulling them off, but more turn. It seems to be doing a little better now. They are producing tomatoes like crazy, but they are splitting and getting bad spots on them before they even ripen. I tried taking them off early to ripen in the window but I’m still getting the bad spots on them within a day or so. Any ideas from the seasoned gardeners out there?

John, Mara, and Super Zucchini!

My zucchini has been doing extremely well as you can see from the picture above. I feel like I have to check it every hour or one of them will turn into super zucchini again! I have had a few try. Lately it is starting to wilt as you can see in the picture below. I’m not sure what is going on with it. It may be that they are planted to close or it has a disease. I hate to think that any of my plants have a disease after all the work we put into the garden. It says that we can’t plant the same thing there for like 3 years if we do!!! Is my garden doomed?

In this next picture you can see my watermelon if you look close. It’s that green round thing. See it? See it? I’m so excited! At the last-minute after the garden was planted I bought it. It sat in its sad little container for weeks and almost died while I was trying to decide where to put it. Finally I stuck it in the 3×3 empty space in the garden. Hmmmm… turns out it needs a lot more room! It has wound its way all around the garden and at last check I had 3 baby watermelons growing on it! Yippy!

I’m thinking next year I need to expand the garden.

Weight Watchers

I joined Weight Watchers yesterday. I made a deal with a friend to lose weight. We have 8 weeks to lose 15 pounds. We are going to put away $10 a week and at the end we get to go buy something new! Yippy! This came about after trying on clothes and not liking how they fit. Grrrr!

Day one started out, well, let’s just say “Don’t join Weight Watchers after lunch!”. Always join in the morning. 🙂 I had gone to lunch with Valerie and we had the most wonderful food at Eat At Thai. Great place to eat people! The Iced Thai coffee alone was 9 points! The rest of the meal wasn’t bad points wise, but I didn’t have much to go on after I was done. Oh, but it was sooooooo good!!!

I have come to realize that I HAVE to start eating breakfast again. That is probably part of the reason for my weight gain. I don’t eat much at all and that is the problem. I used to eat breakfast all the time. It’s the most important meal of the day! Well, hubby doesn’t eat breakfast so I got into his pattern. We don’t eat until around 1pm most days. So if dinner was at 7pm the night before then that is 18 hours without food in my body. Nothing to start my metabolism going in the morning. My body thinks I’m starving it. I know you don’t have to say it… “Have you looked in a mirror lately?” The fat is packing on.

Yesterday, I ate like I normally do and I only used 17 points. Part of that was from the 2 beers that I drank! I am supposed to use 29 points. So my diet begins. I’m teaching myself to eat more. I just made a yummy omelet for breakfast. Yes it was almost noon, but I had been working in the yard and forgot to eat. I did get around to it. Now I hope I’m not too full and end up skipping lunch!
Well, that’s what is going on with me. I haven’t updated in a bit and thought that I should. Have a wonderful day!!!

Working my butt off!

I love the warm sunny days! I am an outdoor person. I hate to think of the day when my Sjogren’s doesn’t let me get out. Have you ever loved something so much that it doesn’t matter how bad it hurts and you do it anyway? I guess working in the yard is my drug. I love to see the change and to breathe the fresh air and to have the sun beating down on me. I love everything about it. As the seasons move on I love the changes and the birds, animals, reptiles, and insects that all my work brings into my yard. I love to sit in my chair by my pond with my family and friends and just relax and enjoy each others company. It’s not just the hard work and the pain during and at the end of the day and the next day and the next that I have to endure. It’s everything that comes from that hard work that makes me get out there and do it. I could just sit on the couch and not do anything, but this is something that keeps me going. It’s something that makes me realize there is more to life than Sjogren’s

I’m going to post some before and after pics! I know you are so excited!!!

OK, so I know the “grass” was green last year. Just so you know it wasn’t grass. I’m not sure what it was, but grass was not on the list. That is phase II of our yard. Making grass grow if that is possible.

That darn grass again! Blah!!! Did you see those bushes? The ones that took over the front of the house??? I decided to chop them to itty bitty things. I still don’t think they are small enough. To tell you the truth I really dislike them. Free bushes!!! Want them? I am looking for a replacement for them.

OK, I’m done making you look at pictures! Have a wonderful night! I’m off to take my pain medicine and go to bed! 😛
